Diplomatic coup

The ongoing visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Iran is very significant in the context of India's relation with Islamic world. Iran is considered to be the spiritual head of Shia Muslim and yields immense clout in the middle-east. This visit comes after PM Modi visited Saudi Arabia which is the spiritual power behind Sunni Muslim. India shares strategic as well as huge business interest with both the countries. It is dependent on oil imports from Iran and Saudia Arabia to meet the energy needs.

With the lifting of international sanctions on Iran it has opened up immense opportunities for cooperation in various fields. India is especially looking to expand cooperation with the Persian Gulf nation in sectors such as trade, investment, infrastructure and energy. Also Iran offers alternate route for India to connect with Afghanistan. Ever since democratic government came into existence in the war-torn Afghanistan, India has made huge investment and stakes are quite high. Due to this India and Afghanistan have developed close ties. In a huge boost today India, Iran and Afghanistan have inked a historic trilateral transit agreement. The pact was signed by representatives of the three countries in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Hassan Rouhani of Iran and the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani after their formal talks. The trilateral agreement would facilitate hassles-free transport of goods between India and Afghanistan via the Chabahar port that is strategically located in the South East of Iran. Earlier today, India and Iran have signed an agreement for the development of the first phase of Chabahar port by India. It would be operated for a specific period by India. This is a massive diplomatic coup by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The transit agreement will further deepen the relation between the three nations. It will also make India an important player in the Middle East.

Peace and Manipur

D ear Editor,

The beautiful emerald state of Manipur with her unique culture and traditions has always been a flashpoint of NE politics since the days of independence. However, just like neighbouring Nagaland that has moved towards a positive direction by signing the Naga Peace Accord; Manipur also needs to understand that long years of insurgency, conflicts between tribal and non-tribal communities as well as inter- and intra-tribal conflicts have been holding the state to develop at its full potential.

China backed militancy can only result in the loss of precious lives and properties; and without peace the military rules operational in the state could not be revoked to bring long term peace and relief for the common people. Socio-economic prosperity is the call of the time and Manipur stands at a crucial juncture as it is destined to become the gateway of the vast Indian subcontinent to SE Asia via Myanmar.  Insurgency and repeated mindless conflicts and violence could never be an alternative to a democracy and there needs to be an end to that approach. Punjab realized that in the past and now Nagaland too has realized the importance of long term peace. It is Manipur’s turn now to look forward to establish a secured future. Establishing peace and democracy in the region can economically transform this entire region and Manipur could truly become the jewel of the crown. All the stakeholders involved in the Manipur conflict; namely the Central and State governments, various tribal and non-tribal groups, representative of different fractions of several insurgent groups operating in the region, civil society members and representative group of local intellectuals and other prominent citizens need to come together on a common platform.

Through your esteemed newsletter I humbly beg all stakeholders to come forward for a meaningful and dedicated peace negotiation for securing the future of the next generation of a proud and vibrant Manipur.

Yours,

Saikat Kumar Basu
